Plans Announced for New Biofuels Plant

The Danish energy company Inbicon announced today that it plans to collaborate with two U.S. companies to build a biofuels plant near Spiritwood in Stutsman County. The U.S. companies are Otoka Energy and Great River Energy, both based in Minnesota.

According to Inbicon CEO Niels Henriksenn, the plant will use his company's proprietary technology to convert 400,000 tons of wheat straw into liquid fuels, solid-fuel pellets and other products. The process will use steam from the adjacent 62-megawatt coal-fired plant being constructed by Great River Energy at the Spiritwood site.

Inbicon recently completed a demonstration plant near the Danish port city of Kalundborg. The plant is integrated with the Asnaes Power Station owned by DONG Energy, Inbicon's parent company, and will use 30,000 tons of straw annually to produce 5.4 million litres of bioethanol for cars, 13,000 tons of coal-substitute pellets for power plants and 11,000 tons of molasses for animal feed.
