A Denver-based company plans to lease 5000 acres in northwestern North Dakota for the purpose of salt and potash mining and wind storage. The company, Dakota Salts LLC, may also include carbon storage in their plans. The estimated cost of the project is between $75 million and $100 million.
The area in Burke County is near the site of the proposed $4 billion, 2000-megawatt Hartland Wind Farm that will incorporate over 1,300 turbines. During periods of low demand for electricity, Dakota Salts plans to use power from the wind farm to compress air and pump it into underground voids created by the mining operations. The compressed air would be released to power a turbine during periods of high electricity demand or when the wind is not blowing, according to the Dakota Salts.
The company plans to begin construction of the project in 2010.
