Green Power Express Could Mean Major Markets for North Dakota Wind Developers

A Michigan company announced today a proposed $12 billion transmission infrastructure project that would bring wind energy from the Dakotas to major cities including Chicago. The company, ITC Holdings Corp., wants to build 3,000 miles of new lines that could transmit 12,000 megawatts of power. The company, which currently manages 15,000 miles of transmission lines, calls the proposed project the Green Power Express.

According to the news report, which was posted on Bloomberg.com, regulatory issues may be a major stumbling block, given the multiple approvals that would be required to construct lines that would cross several states. According to Bloomberg, the project would fail to meet current requirements for approval of new power transmission lines in the Midwest.

The article stated that ITC president Joseph Welch has contacted wind power developers who may be interested in connecting to the project and is looking for utilities interested in partnering in those service areas the new lines would cross. With the necessary approvals, the company would begin construction within 24 months and being transmitting power three years later, according to Bloomberg.
