Renewable Energy Legislation Introduced in Congress

A bill introduced this week by Reps. Edward Markey, D-Mass., and Todd Platts, R-Pa. would require 25% of the nation's energy to be produced by renewable sources by the year 2025. The American Renewable Energy Act would go into effect in 2012 if passed.

Rep. Markey also introduced a bill that would require the nation to reduce its energy consumption by 15% by 2020. According to the lawmakers, the two bills together would create more than 500,000 jobs while saving more than $180 billion in energy costs. Similar legislation introduced in 2007 failed in the Senate.
