Carbon Capture Research Funds

Forty-three research projects that will advance carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies while providing graduate and undergraduate student training opportunities at universities across the country will be supported by $12.7 million in U.S. Department of Energy funding announced today.

The regional sequestration training projects and funding will run for three years and will be managed by the Office of Fossil Energy’s National Energy Technology Laboratory. The projects are funded through the 2009 American Reinvestment and Recovery Act and are aimed at the broad objectives of advancing CCS scientific, technical, and institutional knowledge while simultaneously producing the expertise and workforce needed for the emerging carbon capture and storage industry.

North Dakota State University was awarded $298,949 for the development of protective catings for co-sequestration processes and pipelines. The primary goal of this 24-month project will be to examine the possible development of protective coatings for the interior of process equipment and pipelines handling supercritical CO2. This project will research the development of specialty coatings for use in co-sequestration processes and pipeline transport of supercritical CO2 fluids which might have impurities. This project will support at least two graduate students during the research effort.

Details on all 43 projects are available here.
