The North Dakota Department of Commerce recently posted an article on its website that describes the status of cellulosic ethanol production. According to the article, originally published on Prairiebizmag.com, approximately 300 million gallons of cellulosic ethanol plants are in various stages of planning and development across the country.
The article highlighed several companies including South Dakota-based POET, which is running a pilot-scale project producing cellulosic ethanol from corn cobs at a plant in Scotland, SD and is planning to add cellulosic ethanol production to other existing ethanol plants.
Current constraints to expanded use of cellulosic ethanol, according to the experts interviewed, are current economic conditions and the resistance to higher ethanol blends.
