Wind Farms and Property Values

A team of economists recently completed a study that determined there is no significant effect on property values from nearby wind farms. The study, which was conducted by the Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, examined 7,500 single-family property sales between 1996 and 2007 to compare values before the announcement of a wind energy facility to those after it was built and operating.

In their conclusions the researchers stated, "neither the view of the wind facilities nor the distance of the home to those facilities is found to have any consistent, measurable, and statistically significant effect on home sales prices."

The states included in the study were Washington, Oregon, Oklahoma, Texas. Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Pennsylvania and New York.

The DOE press release is available here. The complete report is available here.
