Grasslands Renewable Energy, based in Bozeman, Mont., says it has received initial approval for a reservoir project that would store excess power from several participating wind farms. Electricity generated from cooperating wind farms would be used to pump water uphill to a 50-acre reservoir on Gordon Butte near Martinsdale, Mont. The water would turn hydropower turbines as its released to a lower reservoir during periods when winds are light.
In addition, the company's Wind Spirit project has received financial commitments from 10 wind developers to fund a feasibility study. The project would collect electricity from several wind farms and link it to large trunk lines designed to carry the electricity to large markets primarily on the West Coast. The wind developers were not named, but a company spokesperson said Wind Spirit participants could include four wind farm sites in Montana, two in Alberta, and one in North Dakota.
