More Indecision in the Coal World

The government of the Australian state of Queensland  has decided to table a proposal to fund an Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle power station incorporating carbon capture and storage. The Queensland premier, Anna Bligh, said, "We had hoped to have a clean coal power station up and running by 2015 but the fact is that the early research has shown us that this is not viable at this time on a commercial scale." The government reportedly has invested over $100 million in the project, known as ZeroGen.

The decision comes on the heels of Basin Electric's announcement on Friday that it is postponing a decision on a carbon capture project for its Antelope Valley Station near Beulah. The project reportedly would cost over $500 million based on a recently-completed engineering and feasibility study. Basin said $6.2 million have been invested in the project, with $2.7 million of that from the North Dakota Industrial Commission.

Australia has the largest lignite reserves in the world, followed by the U.S. (with most of the reserves in North Dakota) and China.
