USDA Loan Guarantees For Cellulosic Ethanol

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced today that it has approved $405 million in loan guarantees to support the commercialization of cellulosic ethanol at three U.S. facilities. The funding was made through the 9003 section of the 2008 Farm Bill.

Coskata Inc. received a $250 million loan guarantee for its proposed woody biomass-to-ethanol facility to be located in Green County, Ala.. The developers plan to produce 55 million gallons per year (55 MMgy) when the project is operational. Construction is expected to begin once financing is finalized.

Enerkem Corp. received a commitment for $80 million for its proposed 10 MMgy municipal solid waste-to-ethanol project in Pontotoc, Miss., which will process 300 tons of feedstock per day. Production is expected to being in 2012.

INEOS New Planet BioEnergy LLC. received a $75 million loan guarantee for its $150 million 8 MMgy waste-to-ethanol project to be located near Vero Beach, Fla. Construction is expected to begin soon as site work is nearly complete, with production planned for 2012.
