The North Dakota Senate reportedly is considering legislation that sets the state's potash tax rate at 1.5 percent. Under the measure, each mine's home county would receive the first $1 million in tax revenue after which the state would get 90 percent. A bill passed by the North Dakota House in February set the rate at 4 percent and gave more of the tax revenue to the counties. London-based Dakota Salts has expressed interest in mining potash in Burke County. The company has estimated its project could begin within two years.
