• North Dakota geologists reportedly are studying clay deposits in the southwestern part of the state to determine whether they hold minerals that can be used by the oil industry. Preliminary studies indicate the deposits contain aluminum oxide, which is used in hydraulic fracturing as a proppant to brace cracks in the surrounding rock so the oil can be pumped out.
