Energy beets are back in the news as the fall harvest nears for 14 small test fields scattered across the state. The pilot sites, which are being supervised by North Dakota State University, are part of the BeetsAll Biofuel project, a partnership between the Green Vision Group of Fargo and Heartland Renewable Energy of Muscatine Iowa. The goal of the project is to establish 12 beet ethanol plants in various parts of North Dakota, each of which would produce 20 million gallons per year and use beets grown within a 20-mile radius. Previous research reportedly has shown that, when compared to corn, energy beets can produce double the amount of ethanol per acre of crop. Construction of the first plant reportedly is expected to begin in 2013 with a startup date in late 2014. A specific site for the initial project has not been announced. Read more
