Montana-Dakota Utilities reportedly plans to install a 7E 3-series gas turbine from General Electric next to the 100MW lignite-based Heskett Generating Station near Mandan in North Dakota. The new turbine will be fueled by pipeline natural gas and generate 88MW with reportedly low emissions when it begins commercial service in 2014. According to a GE spokesperson, the 7E-3 can be started up to full speed in ten minutes, allowing it provide quick addition of supplemental power to compensate for the intermittency of renewable energy.
