Whiting Forges Ahead in Golden Valley County

Whiting Petroleum has applied to the North Dakota Industrial Commission to consider temporary spacing to develop two oil/gas pools discovered by previous wells in Golden Valley County, ND. The two wells are the 44-24TFH Kjelstrup (SESE Section 24, T.142N., R.103W) and the Samuelson #23-32 (NESW of Section 32, T.142N., R.105W). Whiting has also applied to establish multiple spacing units in its acreage at Section 21, T.141N., R.104W in Golden Valley and authorize both horizontal and vertical wells at those locations.

These requests appear to be part of Whiting's Big Island Prospect which is located in Golden Valley County and in Wibaux County, Montana. According to information provided in its January corporate presentation, Whiting has assembled 171,825 gross (121,982 net) acres in the two counties and has identified over 50 prospects in the Upper Red River “D” formation with an average of two drilling locations per prospect and an estimated well completion cost between 3.0 and 3.5 million per well. According to Whiting, the average initial production rate across the company's last 7 Big Island wells (all in Golden Valley County) was 274 BOE per day.

Whiting says it plans to test the Lower Red River “D” zone in Big Island with a horizontal well in 2013.
