In formal comments presented Monday, the Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) advised the Environmenal Protection Agency to lower the advanced biofuels standard announced earlier this year which sets the 2013 standard for cellulosic ethanol at 14 million gallons. The standard was based on expected output from two cellulosic refineries--KiOS and INEOS Bio--due to begin production this year. In its comments, the RFA agued that the EPA's projections are unrealistic. The group also indicated that the volume of sugarcane ethanol imports would not be sufficient to meet the standards requirements for a variety of reasons. Read more
