Stark County Update - April 2013

Whiting Petroleum's drilling program in the Pronghorn Sand play appears to be gathering momentum. In the company's corporate presentation on April 8, a pilot program to drill six wells per 1,280 spacing unit was announced for the northwest corner of the play in Stark County. Whiting's previously stated objective was three wells per 1,280 spacing unit in the Pronghorn. In Whiting's applications on the April NDIC hearing docket (see below), the company is asking for authorization to drill up to five horizontal wells on some or all of the 1,280 spacing units in multiple Bakken pools in Stark and Billings Counties.

Whiting drilled its initial discovery well in the Pronghorn formation during the first half of  2010. (The Pronghorn Sand lies between the Lower Bakken Shale and the Upper Three Forks first bench.) Over thirty horizontal wells have since been completed with initial production rates as high as 3,100 barrels per day, with a completed well cost of $7 million.

Whiting's initial production numbers for the first three months of 2013 shown below range between 426 bopd and 1669 bopd.
