Canada's Environment Minister Announces Cooperation with U.S. on Carbon Capture Technology

Calling 2009 a pivotal year for controlling greenhouse gas emissions, Canada's Environment Minister Jim Prentice today announced a joint approach between Canada and the U.S. Prentice said a major emphasis will be on carbon capture and sequestration. The announcement expanded upon comments regarding a "clean energy dialogue" made by Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper and U.S. President Barack Obama during a meeting in Ottawa yesterday.

Prentice said the two countries will coordinate research and demonstrations of carbon capture and sequestration technology at coal-fired electricity plants. He highlighted North Dakota's Dakota Gasification plant near Beulah, which transports captured and purified carbon dioxide by pipeline to an oilfield near Weyburn, Sask., where it is pumped underground to increase well productivity.
