USGS Says No Study Planned for the Three Forks-Sanish Formation

The U.S. Geological Survey today notified Sen. Byron Dorgan that it has no immediate plans to do a study of the Three Forks-Sanish formation in western North Dakota. Sen. Dorgan requested the study in December. The USGS stated that a comprehensive study would be premature since it lacks adequate drilling data, adding that a minimum of five years of new history would be required.

There is disagreement among geologists and oil companies over whether the Three Forks-Sanish formation is a separate oil reservoir beneath the Bakken formation. Some say it is while others say it acts as a trap that catches oil seeping from the Bakken.
