Montana and Saskatchewan to Pursue Carbon Capture and Storage Project

The first large scale North American carbon capture and storage project would send captured carbon--up to 900 tons daily--from a 300-megawatt coal-fired electricity plant in southern Saskatchewan to northern Montana for storage and later use in oil exploration, according to an Associated Press article published today.

An article dated January 31, 2009 on the Canadian StarPhoenix.com site stated that the Saskatchewan government was prepared to offer $60 million to help fund the project, estimated to cost $170 million. Montana would match that amount with money to be requested from the recently-passed stimulus package. The remaining $50 million would come from private sources, according to StarPhoenix.com, which highlighted the close relationship Montana Gov. Brian Schweitzer has with the Obama administration.
