Large Scale Carbon Capture and Storage Unlikely in the Near Term, Experts Say

A story out on Reuters today gave a rather bleak assessment for the near-term future of carbon capture and storage technology use in the coal-fired industry, largely due to cost constraints. The article pointed out that the allocation for carbon capture in the stimulus package--roughly $3 billion--is approximately the cost of capturing carbon at a single coal-fired plant. The likely near-term targets for carbon capture, according to the article, are oil refineries, ethanol plants and gas processing facilities where carbon dioxide streams are purer and easier to capture.
