New Market for Dakota Wind Power

The AP is reporting today that the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) is studying the integration of hydroelectric and wind power in North and South Dakota. WAPA officials are quoted as saying the plan is being driven by the need for a secondary source of power to supplement the diminished supply of electricity generated by dams on the Missouri River due to lower reservoir levels.

According to the AP, WAPA contracted with Basin Electric Power Cooperative late last year for up to 50 megawatts of wind power annually over a three-year period. The agency is reportedly close to a similar contract with Just Wind for an additional 100 megawatts of wind power generated in South Dakota.
