EERC Wins Award for Renewable Jet Fuel

The University of North Dakota's Energy and Environmental Research Center has won the Best of What's New Award from Popular Science Magazine in the aviation and space category. The award is for the EERC's 100% renewable jet fuel that was announced in September 2008.

The EERC fuel is created from crop oils such as canola and soybean and is the first product of its kind in the world. The fuel has been vigorously tested at the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) as a jet propellant-8 (JP-8) aviation fuel, a petroleum-based fuel widely used by the U.S. military. The fuel reportedly can be tailored to meet a variety of other mission-specific requirements.

The project was sponsored by the U.S. Army Research Office and was financially supported by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). According to the EERC, commercialization of the technology could produce billions of dollars worth of alternative fuels annually.
