Based on its recent bids in lease auctions held by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Slawson Exploration Company, Inc. has big plans for the Bakken. The privately-held company based in Wichita, Kan. paid millions for rights to several parcels in North Dakota that were up for grabs in August and November at the BLM regional offices in Billings, Mont.
In late August, the BLM announced that Slawson bid $6,916,500 for leasing rights on a 1,305-acre parcel in Mountrail County, N.D., which was the highest total bid of the sale.
At the following auction on November 3, Slawson bid over $20 million on four additional North Dakota parcels. The highest single parcel bid was $11,117,700 for 1,710 acres in Mountrail County. A second bid $9,234,243 was for 1,199 acres also in Mountrail. Slawson's bids for two other North Dakota parcels totalling 221 acres came to just over $453,000.
According to information on its website, Slawson Exploration has drilled over 3,500 wells in 10 states since the company was founded in 1957.
