A total of $36 million in bids was received for federal oil and gas leases in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota at an auction held yesterday in Billings, according to a Bureau of Land Management announcement. The leases will not be issued until protests filed by environmental groups are resolved. A BLM spokesman predicted that would occur by the end of the month. Read more...

Leasing decline in West
A report from the Western Energy Alliance (WEA) shows that the number of energy development leases offered by the federal government on public lands in the Rocky Mountain region have declined by 79% since 2005. The region includes Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, North Dakota, New Mexico and Utah. The WEA, made up primarily of oil producers, says the decline is due to uncertainty caused by environmental protests of mineral leases sales by the Bureau of Land Management. Environmentalists say the energy companies have over-produced on federal lands, creating a glut of natural gas that discourages further exploration and lowers demand for leases. The WEA report highlights the effect the trend has had on local economies. Read more...
