The Delaware River Basin Commission issued draft regulations relating to hydraulic fracturing today and plans to hold three public hearings during a 90-day comment period. The members of the commission are the governors of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware and a federal representative from the United States Army Corps of Engineers.
The goal of the regulations, according to the commission, is to bring uniformity to existing regulations in the various states. The rules are primarily intended to regulate drilling in the Marcellus Shale where it is predicted up to 10,000 wells could eventually be completed. A moratorium on approving new drilling operations has been in place since May in the Delaware River Basin area of the Marcellus Shale.
