More Keystone Opposition (Update)

In a letter made public yesterday, more than two dozen members of Congress urged Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to order further environmental impact studies relating to the Keystone XL pipeline project planned by Alberta-based TransCanada Corp. The letter was signed by Tennessee Representative Steve Cohen, a Democrat and  member of the House transportation and infrastructure committee, along with 27 others. Meanwhile, Nebraska lawmakers held meetings last week with geologists, groundwater experts, pipeline officials and state residents to discuss the Keystone project. TransCanada's proposed path through Nebraska crosses the huge underground Ogallala aquifer, which supplies drinking water to eight states and is used for irrigation. Environmental groups have mounted vigorous opposition to the project, citing the consequences of a spill in the region surrounding the aquifer. Read more...

The Keystone XL project is considered a critical part of expansion plans for oil producers in the Williston Basin since TransCanada has agreed to allow pipelines from Montana and North Dakota to connect to a hub in eastern Montana. The pipeline would then transport crude from the region to storage facilities in Oklahoma and refineries on the Gulf Coast. Read more...
