The pace of oil activity in McKenzie County continues to astonish. At month's end, the total active rig count was 70, which is nine more than Mountrail County (29) and Williams County (32) put together. A total of 78 permits (unofficial count) were issued to McKenzie in September, and producers reported stellar initial production numbers all during the month. (see below).
McKenzie had 1,462 producing wells as of July, according to the latest available figures released earlier this month. That's up 383 from the July 2011 total of 1079, or approximately 35%, and puts McKenzie ahead of Mountrail with 1,306 producing wells and Williams with 1,064 (preliminary figures).
For July 2012, McKenzie County reported a total of 4,240,515 barrels, compared to 4,076,123 reported a month earlier, a gain of four percent. Since the first of the year, monthly production has risen by just over 500,000 barrels, or over 13%. In 2011, McKenzie reported 2,730,461 barrels in July, which translates to a year-over-year production increase of 75%. Looking back two years, McKenzie reported 1,468,276 barrels in July 2010, meaning production has nearly tripled over a 24-month period.
As impressive as these numbers are, McKenzie still trails Mountrail County's monthly oil output by over one million barrels. However, Mountrail's volume appears to have reached a plateau, at least temporarily. The difference between the January and July volume is a little more than 130,000 barrels, or about 2.5 percent. A year-over-year monthly average comparison shows Mountrail's gain was just over 870,000 barrels or roughly 19% between July 2011 and July 2012.
As Mountrail's production slows, the momentum in the Bakken play has definitely swung toward McKenzie County, which appears to be on track to assume the title of the state's top oil producer by year's end.
