Basin Adds Seventh Heat Recovery Unit

Bismarck-based Basin Electric Cooperative announced today that it has activated the seventh of its heat recovery power generating stations. The latest station is located near Garvin, Minnesota and joins similar projects in North Dakota near Manning, Zeeland and St. Anthony and in South Dakota near Aberdeen, Clark and Estelline. The eighth and final station is located near Culbertson, Montana and is scheduled to go online by the end of the year.

The heat recovery generating stations use the hot exhaust gases--between 800 and 900 degrees F.--from compressor stations located along the Northern Border Pipeline to generate electricity. The exhaust heat is recovered using heat exchangers installed on the exhaust stack. The recovered heat is then used to vaporize a fluid to drive the generating station's power turbines. Each station produces approximately 5.5 megawatts of electricity.

All the heat recovery units are owned and operated by subsidiaries of Ormat Technologies, a Nevada-based company. Basin Electric has signed power purchase agreements with the subsidiaries for the development of these facilities.
