Basin Authorizes Carbon Capture Study

According to a company news release issued last week, Bismarck-based Basin Electric Cooperative has contracted with British-based Doosan Babcock Energy and Canadian-based HTC Purenergy, Inc. to evaluate CO2 capture alternatives for the Antelope Valley Station near Beulah.

The study will determine the costs and technical requirements of retrofitting  a CO2 capture solution to one of the plant’s two 450-megawatt units. According to Basin, the study's estimated cost is $6.24 million, of which $2.7 million is being funded by the North Dakota Industrial Commission.

In January 2009, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Utilities Service agreed to finance about $300 million of the Antelope Valley carbon capture costs. In July 2009, the U.S. Department of Energy announced plans for a cooperative agreement with Basin Electric that includes a possible $100 million grant to develop CO2 capture technology.
